Joshua Tree National Park

This was another trip with Backcountry Journeys. Jon Resnick was our guide and he did an outstanding job.

It turns out that light pollution is a significant factor at Joshua Tree and we were plagued by a bright moon that set very late in the night giving us a narrow window to shoot Milky Way shots.

This album has only a few shots because our timing was tough and the window for our prime purpose (the Milky Way) was pretty narrow. As this album shows, I'm not a great landscape photographer so when the stars weren't available, I didn't find much to shoot.

In the end my favorite photo from this trip is the sunrise sun star through the Joshua Tree.

Milky Way on the first night. It was very challenging. It turns out that light pollution is a big issue in Joshua Tree National Park. Additionally, the moon did not set till shortly before blue hour and it was 77% full and very bright.
Traffic at Skull Rock.
Moonrise at Skull Rock. The moon was actually out and up, but I may have taken some liberties with its placement.
My favorite Sunstar of the trip. There was not much else to shoot at sunrise because there were ZERO clouds, so no colorful skies.
Sunstars and Joshua Trees are a good combo.
I was totally uninterested in Star Trails when I went, but then I shot this one. I thought it turned out great, and I had nothing else to do while we waited for the moon to set so we could shoot Milky Way images. I think the straight lines are airplanes.
Milky Way on the last night. It was very challenging. It turns out that light pollution is a big issue in Joshua Tree National Park. Additionally, the moon did not set till shortly before blue hour and it was 91% full and very bright.
