The Everglades

This was the last trip of 2023. Trevor LaClair was our guide from BCJ. At one point it was scheduled to be Russell Graves but he has parted company with BCJ and is doing his own gig now.

During the trip I kept thinking that we weren't really "killing it" but when I got home I had hundreds of great images.

Seperate from the BCJ trip I went to Cape Coral nearby to photograph the Burrowing Owls that are in abundance there. I had great luck with that and got some good images. Because the owls live right in the city and they are protected, nobody really bothers them and they are not shy at all.

All in all a great trip and I met some really nice people. I hope to see them again down the road.

American White Pelicans playing follow the leader. I thought I would try a "high key" image with the editing. I like it a lot.

Tricolored Heron
Burrowing Owl
Burrowing Owl in Cape Coral. This is the very first one I saw. I met Beverly Saltonstall at the Chamber of Commerce and this one was right there. Beverly literally wrote the book on the owls in Cape Coral.
Burrowing Owl. Their eyes are amazing. Most have the bright yellow coloration outside the pupils.
Burrowing Owl. These owls are protected and they are easy to photograph. They are used to people and pets walking by.
Burrowing Owls. This is a mated pair. I'd like to be back there in the spring when the eggs hatch.
Burrowing Owl mated pair. Look at the difference in eye color. This is not indicative of male/female. The female is usually lighter and larger than the male.
Alligators are popular in the Everglades and everyone wants a picture. Look at the reflection in this ones eyes.
Alligator in Big Cypress on Loop Road. This gator was bigger. Alligators in the water are tough to get a good shot of. It's a lot easier when they come out to get some sun. Shot with a long lens at a respectful distance.
Alligator in Big Cypress on Loop Road. This guy wasn't huge, but at least he was cooperative. Shot with a long lens at a respectful distance.
Great Egret perched in a forest filled mostly with dead trees.

Little Blue Heron on Red Mangrove roots.
This was my last shot in Everglades National Park as the light faded. This is a Red-shouldered Hawk.

Green Heron in Big Cypress on Loop Road.
Green Heron in Big Cypress on Loop Road. It wasn't what I expected but I got some nice shots of birds.
Tricolored Heron in Big Cypress on Loop Road. This is one of my favorite birds.
American White Pelican flyby.
American White Pelicans. This was shot as a pano with my long lens and stitched together. The detail is awesome.

Snowy Egret
Juvenile racoon. There was an adult and four kits. If you look closely you can see my reflection in its eyes. I was standing on the boardwalk just above it. I was mostly unperturbed by my presence.
Racoon in a tree. None of us saw this but the boat captain did. We circled back for a better look.
Great Blue Heron and Little Blue Heron. Yep, you read that right. This is the White Morph Great Blue Heron.
Eastern Pheobe in the early morning light.

Spider and web.
Anhinga
When Trevor pointed out the Wood Stork beside the road I was unimpressed. I had seen plenty. Then he pointed out that he was eating a snake! Awesome!
Vocal Osprey on a cool dead snag.
Female Osprey on her nest in Everglades National Park.
Cormorant in the morning light. These birds get a bad rap. I've taken some pretty good photos of them.
This Cormorant has been fishing without success so far. I love the green eye!
Bottlenose Dolphin playing the wake of the boat.
