Brown Bears in Alaska

This was a trip with Expeditions Alaska and Carl Donohue. We stayed on a 98 foot yacht named Le Canard. Our accomodations were super comfortable and came complete with fast internet. Thanks Elon Musk!

Each day we left the boat and took a skiff over to a creek that was busy with salmon, which in turn made it busy with bears. We got some nice stuff!

The rule was that we could not approach any bear closer than 50 yards, and we did not. The bears however had no such rule and they were often 10 yards away, and even closer. The salmon were of way more interest to them than we were.

I try not to go crazy with too many images and I attempt to limit myself. I'm not even sure that these are the best ones. They are just the first images I tagged as good candidates for the gallery. I hope you enjoy them.

This creek is where we shot 95% of our images. This was not our weather for most of the trip. We often could not see the mountains at all.
This is a cell phone picture from one morning. Almost as fast as I took the picture the light was gone.
The boat in the background was our temporary home. Very comfortable.
Bears are not fussy eaters.
Every adult bear is every other adult bear's mortal enemy. I saw no fights but I definately saw bears establishing their dominance over other bears.
Token Bald Eagle. You have to photograph one if you go to Alaska. For more and better eagle photos, view the Nanook Lodge album on this site
Magpie
Otter
This photo of Geographic Harbor was taken from the plane on the way out. If you look all the way back to the most distant piece of water you see, that's where we were anchored for multiple days.
Oyster Catcher
You can't approach within 50 yards of the bear. The bears can do as they please. You get used to it pretty quick. The white headed guy is paying no attention at all to the bear that is quite close to him.
