Fishing and Photography April 2023

On my first real trip of 2023, I went to Florida to fish and take some photos. I started by meeting David Whittinghill in Melbourne and we hooked up with fishing guide Roy Bass for a couple of good days on Headwaters Lake (Fellsmere).

We went to the Stick Marsh each morning for photos since fishing didn’t start till 3:00 PM. We also visited the Botanical Gardens at Florida Tech. Once that portion of the trip was done I went over to Grape Hammock Fish Camp and spent 3 days bream fishing. It was not terribly productive, but it’s always great spending time with Jimmie, Lindsay and Gary.

From there I rode down to Wakodahatchie for two mornings of bird and, it turns out, alligator photography.

From there I made my way back up to Vero Beach and spent my last morning under cloudy skies on Blue Cypress Lake with Mark Smith for some nesting Osprey photos. This was my 3rd trip to Blue Cypress and I think my 5th day overall. I’m sure it won’t be my last.

This is the only shot I got at the Botanical Gardens as much of the Gardens were closed.
Roseate Spoonbills in breeding colors are the main attraction at the Stick Marsh. They nest in the first part of the year and mornings are a good time to photograph them.
Stick selection is super important. This stick ended up being rejected by this Roseate Spoonbill.

Overly ambitious stick selection. This one won't fly.

Iridescent pigeon feathers. These birds are not skittish and closeups are easy at Wakodahatchee.

Much better.
Just a few years ago this shot would not have been usable. Shot in low light at 25,600 ISO the original is very noisy and unusable. Lightroom now has an excellent Denoise function built in, and it saved this image.
