Herons and Owls - Seattle - March 2026

Wendy and I had been promising to visit Andrea for a while and we finally made it happen. We met Steve out there and Andrea and Bonnie served as our guides and took us to all the good spots. The Great Blue Herons were out in force at Port Everett and the Short-eared Owls were hunting at their favorite field. We also "found" a Barn Owl based on the intel that Andrea and Bonnie had gathered. That was a treat. We had exactly one chance for the owl to show up, and we scored.

We had a three-owl day with the Shorties, Great Horned Owl, and the Barn Owl, with cameo appearance by both male and female Harrier Hawks.  The female Harrier duked it out with a Short-eared Owl.

We ended up at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge where we saw a bunch of different birds but found (also with intel gathered by Andrea) a Rufous Hummingbird nest with a Hummingbird sitting on it. The nest itself is about the size of a golf ball and is incredibly hard to spot. Without Andrea and Bonnie's help, we would'nt have gotten a bit of this.
